FOUNDER PERSPECTIVE

For Dr. Sunny Xiaojun Sun, mobility is not theoretical. It is personal.

Before founding BionicM,  Dr. Sunny Xiaojun Sun lived the daily realities that prosthetic users know well: the need to move with confidence, manage fatigue, navigate changing environments, and trust the technology beneath them. That experience shaped the questions BionicM set out to answer.

  • How should powered assistance respond in real life?

  • How can support feel useful without feeling overwhelming?

  • How can advanced technology help both users and clinicians with less friction?

BionicM’s design approach began with those questions. It combines Dr. Sun's lived experience as an amputee with his engineering background and clinical input to develop powered mobility that is grounded in real-world use.

Dr. Sunny Xiaojun Sun

Founder & CEO

BionicM was founded by Dr. Sunny Xiaojun Sun, an amputee, engineer, and graduate of the University of Tokyo. His firsthand experience with limb loss and prosthetic use shaped a different approach to powered mobility: one focused on real-world movement, practical clinical needs, and the confidence users need beyond the clinic.

Predictable Stability

& Patient Safety

Engineered to improve confidence and reduce uncertainty.

Designed with Daily Life in Mind

Informed by Firsthand Use

Built for Clinical Relevance

Real-world mobility includes transitions, uneven ground, fatigue, confidence, changing pace, and unexpected environments. These daily demands shape how BionicM thinks about support.

BionicM’s perspective is shaped by Xiaojun’s experience as an amputee and long-term prosthetic user, paired with feedback from clinicians and users.

User insight is translated through engineering and clinical collaboration so Bio Leg can support meaningful care conversations and real-world mobility goals.

REAL-WORLD MOBILITY

Better technology starts with better understanding.

Prosthetic technology has to work in places that are unpredictable: sidewalks, stairs, ramps, clinics, homes, offices, airports, and long days on your feet. BionicM approaches design from those realities, not just controlled environments.

USER-DRIVEN DESIGN

Designed by Someone Who Understands
Mobility Differently

BionicM was founded by Dr. Sunny Xiaojun Sun, an amputee, engineer, and graduate of the University of Tokyo. His firsthand experience with limb loss and prosthetic use shaped a different approach to powered mobility: one focused on real-world movement, practical clinical needs, and the confidence users need beyond the clinic.

Mobility happens across changing surfaces, changing speeds, and changing levels of confidence. BionicM designs with those everyday demands in view.

HOW WE THINK

We do not start with technology alone. We start with the person using it.

01

Real Environments

02

Real transitions

Standing, walking, stopping, sitting, and navigating the unexpected all place different demands on a prosthetic knee. Bio Leg is designed to support users through these moments with intelligent assistance.

03

Real clinical workflows

Technology has to make sense for clinicians too. BionicM keeps fitting, tuning, education, and support in the design conversation from the beginning.

Real-Time Adaptive Power

Practical Daily Performance

Engineered Around
What Matters

The Bio Leg® delivers practical performance where it counts.

Engineering Discipline

Advanced technology is applied with purpose: to support natural movement, predictable behavior, and practical use.

Clinical Collaboration

Clinician feedback helps ensure the technology can be understood, fitted, tuned, and adopted in real care settings.

DESIGN TRANSLATION

Lived experience identifies the challenge.
Engineering turns it into support.

Dr. Sun's experience as an amputee helped define the real-world mobility challenges BionicM wanted to address. His engineering background helped turn those challenges into design priorities. Bio Leg reflects that combination: personal understanding, technical discipline, and practical input from clinicians.

Personal Insight

Firsthand experience helps reveal the small moments that can affect confidence, comfort, and trust during daily mobility.

DESIGN APPROACH

Built around the moments that matter in real life.

BionicM’s design approach is shaped by the belief that mobility technology should support people in the real world, not just perform well in theory. Lived experience helps identify the challenges that matter. Engineering turns those insights into movement support. Clinician feedback helps refine how that support is delivered in care.

Listen

Understand the daily challenges users and clinicians experience.

Translate

Turn those challenges into design priorities.

Engineer

Develop powered support that responds to real movement demands

Refine

Use clinical insight and user feedback to improve the experience over time

REAL-WORLD VALUE

Designed to support confidence on both sides of care.
