BionicM Receives 2026 Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award

August 27, 2026 — Tokyo, Japan — BionicM Inc. has been selected as a recipient of the 2026 Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award at the University Venture Awards 2026 (Award for Academic Startups), a prestigious national recognition celebrating promising university-born ventures in Japan.

The award recognizes BionicM’s commitment to improving the quality of life and mobility of people with lower-limb amputations, as well as the company’s ability to translate advanced university research into a commercially viable technology that addresses a significant social challenge.

The University Venture Awards are jointly organized by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) and the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), with support from Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), the Japan Academic Society for Ventures and Entrepreneurs, and other organizations. The program was established in 2014 to recognize outstanding ventures founded on university research and development成果, while encouraging the commercialization of academic innovation and supporting the growth of university-born companies.

A Highly Selective National Recognition

Receiving the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award represents a significant achievement within Japan’s university startup and technology ecosystem.

For the 2026 awards, 41 ventures applied during the official application period. Following a rigorous evaluation process that included both written application review and interviews conducted by an external panel of experts, just six university ventures were selected as finalists for the year’s awards. From those finalists, the program’s major awards—including the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award and Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Award—were determined.

BionicM was ultimately selected for the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award, recognizing the company among the most promising university-born ventures evaluated through the 2026 program. The award was presented on August 27, 2026, at Tokyo Big Sight as part of University Fair 2026 – Innovation Japan.

From University Research to Real-World Mobility

BionicM was founded on technology originating from the University of Tokyo, with roots in humanoid robotics and biomechanical engineering research. Today, the company is developing and commercializing the Bio Leg®, a powered prosthetic leg designed to help people with lower-limb amputations achieve greater mobility and independence.

The University Venture Awards specifically recognize ventures that demonstrate more than technological innovation alone. The program seeks companies that can successfully translate research and development into ventures with the potential for meaningful societal impact and sustainable growth.

This focus closely aligns with BionicM’s mission. By combining advanced robotics, real-time gait-intent detection technology, and a commercially viable powered prosthetic platform, BionicM is working to bring a new generation of mobility technology to people with limb loss.
