BionicM is proud to announce the launch of a new clinical research collaboration with Brooks Rehabilitation focused on evaluating the real-world impact of powered prosthetic knee technology.

The study, titled Adaptive Mobility Technology: A Comparative Study of Bio Leg and C-Leg, will assess functional mobility outcomes for individuals with transfemoral (above-knee) amputation using the Bio Leg powered prosthetic knee compared to traditional microprocessor-controlled knees.

Advancing Mobility Through Clinical Research

For many individuals with above-knee amputation, mobility challenges extend beyond level walking. Activities such as navigating uneven terrain, climbing ramps, and transitioning from sitting to standing often require compensatory movements that increase physical effort and fatigue.

While microprocessor knees have improved safety and stability, powered prosthetic technology introduces the potential for active assistance during movement, helping users move more efficiently and naturally.

This study is designed to generate objective clinical data that will deepen understanding of how powered assistance may improve:

• Functional mobility

• Movement efficiency

• Endurance and fatigue

• Overall user experience

Study Overview

The exploratory pilot study will evaluate participants using both their current prosthetic knee and the Bio Leg, allowing researchers to directly compare performance across devices.

Outcomes will be measured through a combination of:

• Clinical assessments

• Biomechanical analysis

• Patient-reported feedback

Testing will take place at Brooks Rehabilitation, including within the Brooks Motion Analysis Center, leveraging advanced research infrastructure and expertise.

Collaborative Expertise

This research effort brings together an interdisciplinary team of clinicians, researchers, and engineers specializing in amputee rehabilitation and mobility science.

The study is led by:

• Emily J. Fox, PhD, DPT, MHS, Director of Neuromuscular Research at Brooks Rehabilitation

• Howard Weiss, DO, Medical Director of the Amputee Program at Brooks Rehabilitation

Their leadership ensures a rigorous, clinically grounded evaluation of powered prosthetic technology and its potential to improve patient outcomes.

Why This Matters

At BionicM, our mission is to Power Mobility for All. This collaboration represents an important step toward building the clinical evidence needed to support the next generation of prosthetic innovation.

By combining advanced robotics with real-world clinical evaluation, this study aims to provide meaningful insights that can guide:

• Clinical decision-making

• Future prosthetic development

• Improved quality of life for individuals with limb loss
